Lymphatic vessels

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the human body and plays a central role in the immune system and in maintaining fluid balance.

It consists of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymphatic organs such as the spleen and thymus. The lymph vessels transport a clear fluid called lymph through the body. About 2 liters of lymph are transported every day. Disorders can lead to swelling (lymphoedema) or swollen lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system usually works unnoticed in the background, but is essential for our health and immune defense.

A healthy lifestyle with sufficient exercise can support the lymphatic system.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic swelling caused by a disruption in lymphatic drainage. Lymph fluid accumulates in the tissue, which leads to a doughy swelling, usually on the arms or legs. Typical symptoms are a feeling of tension and heaviness as well as restricted mobility of the affected limbs. The skin can harden over time and become more susceptible to infection.

A distinction is made between primary (congenital) and secondary (acquired) lymphoedema, the latter being more common and often the result of surgery, injury or radiation.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent progression and alleviate symptoms.

Lipedema and lipohypertrophy

Lipedema is to be distinguished from lymphoedema. Lipoedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that mainly affects women and is characterized by a symmetrical, painful increase in subcutaneous fatty tissue on the arms and/or legs.

The disease often begins during phases of hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy or the menopause and probably has a genetic component.

Lipoedema is characterized by the discrepancy between a slim upper body and disproportionately voluminous extremities, whereby hands and feet are usually not affected.

Those affected suffer from feelings of tension, sensitivity to touch and a slight tendency to hematoma in the affected areas.
