Medical evaluation and therapy

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the human body and plays a central role in the immune system and in maintaining fluid balance. Disorders can lead to swelling (lymphoedema) or swollen lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system usually works unnoticed in the background, but is essential for our health and immune defense. A healthy lifestyle with sufficient exercise and fluid intake can support the lymphatic system. In the angiology consultation, patients are carefully questioned and physically examined. Other diseases that lead to swelling are ruled out, e.g. venous disease. In unclear cases, further investigations can be arranged, e.g. microlymphography.

Treatment and advice

In addition to the prescription/adjustment of compression stockings and the organization/provision of professional complex physical decongestive therapy, comprehensive advice is essential for dealing with lymphedema. Long-term support is often necessary. Important factors are: Skin care and hygiene to prevent infections, lifestyle advice (weight control, dietary adjustments), exercise advice, assistance in coping with the chronic illness and possible cosmetic impairments.

Most of these measures also apply to patients with lipedema.
