Lymphatic vessels

The lymphatic system is an essential component of the human body and plays a central role in the immune system and in maintaining fluid balance.

It consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and lymphatic organs such as the spleen and thymus. The lymphatic vessels transport a clear fluid called lymph throughout the body. About 2 liters of lymph fluid are transported daily. Disruptions can lead to swelling (lymphedema) or swollen lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system usually works unnoticed in the background, but it is essential for our health and immune system.

A healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of exercise can support the lymphatic system.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic swelling caused by a disruption in lymphatic drainage. This causes lymph fluid to accumulate in the tissues, leading to a doughy swelling, usually in the arms or legs. Typical symptoms include a feeling of tightness and heaviness, as well as limited mobility in the affected limbs. Over time, the skin may harden and become more susceptible to infections.

A distinction is made between primary (congenital) and secondary (acquired) lymphedema, with the latter being more common and often resulting from surgery, injury, or radiation therapy.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent the condition from progressing and to relieve symptoms.

Lipedema and Lipohypertrophy

Lipedema must be distinguished from lymphedema. Lipedema is a chronic disorder of fat distribution that primarily affects women and is characterized by a symmetrical, painful accumulation of subcutaneous fat on the arms and/or legs.

The condition often begins during periods of hormonal changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, and is thought to have a genetic component.

A characteristic feature of lipedema is the discrepancy between a slender upper body and disproportionately voluminous limbs, although the hands and feet are generally not affected.

Those affected experience a feeling of tightness, sensitivity to touch, and a slight tendency to bruise in the affected areas.
