Angiology

Arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels

Angiology is a specialized field of medicine and deals with the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. This includes diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.

Cardiovascular diseases are widespread. Our blood vessels, the arteries and veins, are central to this circulation and their disease has serious consequences.

For example, hardening of the arteries (“arteriosclerosis”) not only occurs in coronary vessels and cerebral arteries, but can affect all arteries in the body. An important clinical picture in angiology is therefore arteriosclerosis in the legs, also known as “intermittent claudication”.

Common venous diseases include varicose veins and thrombosis. Another important branch of angiology is lymphology, which deals with the development, diagnosis and treatment of lymphoedema.

By carefully questioning and physically examining patients – together with technical examination methods such as ultrasound – we can precisely diagnose vascular diseases. Careful diagnostics form the basis for individual treatment planning.

The aim of angiology is to maintain and improve vascular health and thus the quality of life of patients.

This comprehensive understanding of angiology is the basis for our work.

Main topics in angiology

  • Arteries

Arterial diseases affect the blood vessels that transport oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the organs and tissues. These diseases can lead to significant health problems as they restrict or block the flow of blood.

  • Veins

Low-oxygen blood flows through the veins from the organs and tissues back to the heart. Varicose veins can lead to relevant everyday complaints. Thromboses must be detected and treated as quickly as possible in order to prevent serious complications (pulmonary embolisms).

  • Lymphatic vessels

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the human body and plays a central role in the immune system and in maintaining fluid balance. Lymphoedema can be congenital or occur particularly after major surgery (often for tumor diseases).
